"The Cowboy
Killers"

Brief History of the band…
Steve Moore has been playing around the southeast since the very early 1980’s. And in the many different incarnations of this band, they were playing what is now known as Americana or Alternative Country long before there were even such terms. However, they also incorporated a very "eclectic" song selection so that they were prepared for almost any audience, venue, or situation. When asked what type of music we play, our answer was "Rock'n Psychedelic Country Funk"....fusing many styles with our own "unique" perspective...but always trying to play "to" and more importantly "for" the audience. The band was comprised of a revolving roster of a few of the top musicians based in Oxford, MS, and played regularly around that area before Steve moved to Austin, Texas in 1986. When Steve returned to MS in the 1987, a new lineup picked right back up where the others had left off and continued to play around the southeast up until 1990. Steve then moved to Nashville, TN where he worked exclusively in the music business until 2001. He moved back to Mississippi to be closer to his family and to work on several other music related projects including getting back into performing live.
The Cowboy Killers have evolved from several different band names, they were most well known as:
Steve Moore
&
The New South
They then became:
"Durphy Doucette
&
The Armitage Shanks"

Description of the Band Today...
"THE COWBOY KILLERS" play a wide variety of music at their live shows, but mainly focus on "SOUTHERN MUSIC". They can use any combinations of the musicians below either as a duo, three piece, four piece, or five piece band depending on the need and the budget. They usually play an acoustic set first and move on to progressively more electric music on following sets ending up with a ROCKING last set. They will often play many of Steve's originals, but also play very wide variety of "covers" including songs by Steve's many friends and associates that he's worked with over the years such as The Paladins, Todd Snider, Jamie Hartford, Steve Forbert, making for an interesting yet diverse and eclectic selection of songs as well as a unique show. Although, we have a "usual line up" due to the many changes in scheduling - we are adding "side-men" on as as needed basis.

Steve began playing both as a solo artist and with his own band back in 1978. He has toured extensively with his own bands and opened for many major acts including Paul Davis also from Meridian. He also toured with and opened for Keith Sykes of MCA records. He has played guitar and harmonica with a number of different bands since then. Steve took a few years off from playing live when he began practicing entertainment law on Music Row in Nashville where he worked with a number of different national and international acts. However, he continued to write songs and work in his studio, The Labyrinth, where he recorded a number of different musicians including Will Kimbrough, John Keane, and Todd Snider. He moved back to Meridian to take on a number of different music projects including founding High Cotton Records and writing a book – “The Truth About the Music Business”. He has written hundreds of songs and has just finished his latest record—“True Meridian”. He is currently working on his next record which will include a number of songs: "She's Beginning to See" (A song he wrote for a special girl when he was in London in 1998).

Clay Barnes
Guitars, Keyboards/Backing Vocals
Since Clay had moved off to New York before I really started playing around the Meridian scene, I didn't meet Clay until the late 80's or early 90's. The first time we ever played together was at The Shed House. We sat in during a break of some band and did a Willie Nile cover, "Shoulders", and one of my songs. I'm sure he was surprised when we pulled off a piano song on guitar. We've never rehearsed but have played a couple of times since then including one time when we covered both "What Kinda Guy" by Steve Forbert and a Willie Nile tune--he played on both songs on the respective records. When I came back to Meridian in 2001, Clay and I started working on his studio, Point Recording. We've come a long way towards getting that "Sound" and have done projects with Steve Forbert & Aarron Garrett, SecondHandHeroes, 10 lb. Biscuit, among others. Clay has played live and recorded with The Cryers, Willie Nile & Steve Forbert. He also did a project with Terry Poole before I moved to Meridian that turned out really well. He's got a very interesting laid back style of playing that is quite evident on this record. He's a very fine guitarist and keyboard player as well as a few other instruments. We've had a great time working on this record and we have spent a long time getting the studio fine-tuned to the point (no pun intended) that he's ready to take on just about any type of project that comes his way. I hope that he's able to find the right projects that will allow his ability as a player and his keen sense of mixing will be known such that he will finally receive some of the success that he deserves.

Live at Austin City Limits w/ Steve Forbert
